32. Where was God during Auschwitz?

 Perhaps you already knew that during the Third Reich, which finished in May 1945, some six million Jews were murdered. Why did Auschwitz concentration camp exist at all? And that was not all evil in the twentieth century, as you well know. Also in our century now some form of slavery exists. 

Where was God during Auschwitz? Evil problem is not so simple to explain and convey the origin of, anyway. Our Mother the Church explains that it is not that simple to define why evil. We have to contemplate all the Christian faith to reach some explanation. 

God is love and he has created us so as to have other people who could reach happiness too. Moreover we exist to get to know God and to love him and to give him glory. I mean he wished somebody else could enjoy existence happiness. 

And he has made us free. Since we are free we can choose well: to love him, now in this life and then after for ever and ever. He wishes we be free. Thus also we can exert bad use of our freedom and choose wrong. 

Ultimately all what is bad has as its origin one single thing: sin. Anyway he has rescued us from sin and from hell, by dying on the Cross. We can do evil indeed. And the worst evil ever was to crucify him and put him to death on a cross. And he has obtained thus the best ever – our rescue from eternal death. Plus his glory plus opening us Heaven’s door. 

The person who has introduced God into his or her life, that person makes him or herself capable to give reason and sense to any bad thing that might happen to them, like pain or disease. 

Only is that person able to give sense to what everyone would call bad. 

Have you ever thought why Mother Teresa was able to take up the sick on the street and attend to people with leprosy? Once a reporter told her she wouldn’t do that despite she was given one million dollars. Mother Teresa answered neither would she do that for that sum. Those nuns spend one hour before Jesus Crist in their chapel Tabernacle, apart from devoting themselves to attend to lepers and sick people. No love to God, no caring about the poor and the homeless.
